Skiing Puerto Rico

My third day in San Juan, Puerto Rico started with an early poolside lunch at the La Concha resort's Solera restaurant, which has a great tropical salad with passion fruit dressing.

First opened in 1958, this fashion spot had fallen into terrible decay and was shuttered for more than twelve years. Now, returned to its tropical modern roots, the open flow plan envelopes you in a relaxing natural light. Every room faces the ocean and the internal balconies overlook a spacious inner courtyard and an infinity pool.

If the adrenalin of jet-skiing off wave-tops is your thing, it’s a great way to experience a unique view of the city from off-shore. My guide on the boat pointed out various coastal sites and related how this walled city was virtually impenetrable by sea until the Spanish-American war.

Later on, I dined at the Dragon Fly eatery in town where the posh but stern hostess turned away everyone without a reservation -- be sure to call ahead! The food is to share so ordering various small plates for the table is a great idea for a group.

The Mongolian beef ropa vieja with mu shu tortillas was by far my favorite, but other stand-outs included Peking duck nachos with wasabi sour cream and quesadilla spring rolls with Chinese sausage and lime sour cream.
